5-Year-Old Dies After Dog Attack at Caregiver's Home in Ladson, SC

Ladson, SC (June 29, 2026) – A 5-year-old child died on Saturday morning, June 28, after being attacked by a dog at a caregiver's home in Ladson. 

Dorchester County deputies responded to a home on Chemistry Circle regarding an active disturbance and found both an adult and a child with injuries from the attack. Both were taken to the hospital, where Jayceon Gates, the child, died shortly after. Authorities identified the dog involved as a pit bull terrier.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division, the Crime Scene Unit, and SLED are conducting an active death investigation.
