Pedestrian Safety and Fatal Crashes in Beaufort County

Pedestrian-involved crashes remain one of the most serious and deadly types of traffic incidents in Beaufort County, particularly along major corridors such as US 21. This roadway serves as a primary route connecting Beaufort, Lady’s Island, and surrounding coastal communities, carrying a steady mix of commuter traffic, tourists, and commercial vehicles throughout the day and evening hours.

According to South Carolina traffic safety data, pedestrian fatalities often occur during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced, and drivers may have less time to react.

Roads like US 21 frequently lack continuous lighting in certain stretches, and higher travel speeds can significantly increase the severity of injuries when a pedestrian is struck. Even vehicles traveling at posted speed limits can cause catastrophic or fatal injuries due to the force of impact.

Common contributing factors in pedestrian crashes include low visibility, distracted driving, failure to yield, impaired driving, and pedestrians attempting to cross roadways outside of marked crosswalks.

In coastal and tourist-heavy areas like Beaufort County, unfamiliar drivers and increased seasonal traffic can further elevate crash risks, especially after dark.

Investigations into fatal pedestrian crashes typically involve a detailed reconstruction of the scene. Troopers examine vehicle damage, roadway markings, lighting conditions, sightlines, and any available surveillance or dashcam footage.

Witness statements and physical evidence are reviewed to determine whether speed, visibility, driver reaction time, or other factors played a role. When fatalities occur, investigations may take weeks or longer to complete as authorities work to establish a clear sequence of events.
