Car Strikes Gas Station Building on Rivers Ave in North Charleston, SC
July 31, 2026

North Charleston, SC (July 31, 2026) – A vehicle crashed into a gas station building on Friday morning, July 31, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Hawthorne Avenue and Rivers Avenue. Police confirmed injuries resulted from the collision, though the number of people hurt and the extent of their injuries have not been released.

Additional details about the crash have not yet been made public. Police continue to look into what led up to the collision.

We're thinking of everyone affected and wish them a full recovery.

Who Can Be Responsible When a Car Crashes Into a Store in North Charleston, SC?

Storefront and vehicle-into-building crashes tend to raise a different set of questions than a typical two-car collision, since more than one party can end up sharing responsibility.

Rivers Avenue is one of the busiest commercial corridors in North Charleston, and it runs alongside I-26 and connects to Ashley Phosphate Road. Businesses along stretches like this face a real risk from drivers pulling in or out of parking lots and driveways.

In most cases, the driver bears primary responsibility if the crash resulted from something like pressing the accelerator instead of the brake, distracted driving, or simply misjudging the approach to a parking space.

However, liability doesn't always stop with the driver. If a defect in the vehicle, like a stuck throttle or faulty brake system, contributed to the crash, a product liability claim against the manufacturer could come into play. In rarer cases, if a property lacked adequate bollards or barriers in an area with a known history of similar crashes, a premises liability claim against the property owner might also be worth examining.

For anyone injured in one of these crashes, whether they were a driver, passenger, or someone inside the building at the time, injuries can range from lacerations and broken bones to more serious trauma, depending on the force of impact. Sorting out which party or parties bear responsibility usually requires looking at vehicle maintenance records, surveillance footage, and the design of the parking area itself.

Because these cases can involve more than one potentially liable party, a car accident lawyer typically has to build the claim from several directions at once, requesting maintenance records from the vehicle owner, reviewing any manufacturer recalls, and pulling surveillance footage from the property before it's overwritten.
