Child Dies, Two Adults Critically Burned in Colleton Co., SC

Child Dies, Two Adults Critically Burned in Colleton Co., SC
July 27, 2026

Colleton County, SC (July 27, 2026) – A child died, and two elderly adults were critically injured on Monday morning, July 27, after a house fire broke out on Mazio Circle in Colleton County.

The Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded around 6:13 a.m. and found roughly 75 percent of the wood-frame home already involved in flames. The fire was brought under control within 35 minutes. The two adults suffered severe burns and were transported by ground to a burn center for treatment.

Multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the child who lost their life, and we hope for a full recovery for the two adults who were hurt.

What Legal Options Exist After a Fatal House Fire in Colleton County, SC?

Child Dies, Two Adults Critically Burned in Colleton County FireWhen a fire spreads quickly and extensively in Colleton County, questions about what caused it and whether it could have been prevented become central to any legal claim that follows. This area of Colleton County sits near other rural corridors, where older wood-frame homes are common and can be especially vulnerable to fast-moving fires.

If the fire was linked to a defective appliance, faulty wiring, or another product-related issue, the manufacturer could potentially bear responsibility under South Carolina's product liability laws. If the home was rented, questions about a landlord's maintenance obligations, such as functioning smoke detectors or code-compliant electrical systems, could also become relevant to a premises liability claim.

South Carolina law allows a personal representative to bring a wrongful death claim on behalf of a deceased child's family, generally within three years of the date of death, seeking damages for funeral expenses and the loss of companionship.

For surviving victims, a separate personal injury claim could address the extensive medical treatment burn injuries typically require, including specialized care at a burn center and long recovery periods.

Because fire scenes can change rapidly during cleanup and investigation, preserving evidence like wiring, appliances, or building materials early on can be critical to identifying what actually caused the blaze.

A wrongful death lawyer can help a family stay connected to that investigation, working to obtain reports from multiple responding agencies and identify all potentially responsible parties before physical evidence is lost.
