York County, SC (July 24, 2026) – A driver died on Thursday night, July 23, after being struck by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 near mile marker 73, close to the exit for SC 901.
As reported by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver had been traveling in a 2013 Volkswagen when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a wall. The driver then got out and was standing in the road when an oncoming tractor-trailer struck them.
Emergency units pronounced the driver dead at the scene. No additional details about the driver have been released.
Troopers continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.
We extend our sincere condolences to the driver's family and loved ones.

Trucking companies are also required to maintain records such as driver logs, dispatch records, and maintenance histories, all of which can reveal whether fatigue, mechanical failure, or improper training played a role in a crash.
Because these records tend to be kept only for a limited time, preserving them quickly is one of the most important steps a family can take after a fatal trucking collision. Insurance carriers and trucking companies typically have investigators on scene within hours of a serious crash, which can put grieving families at a disadvantage if they wait to gather their own evidence.
A wrongful death lawyer can send preservation letters early, requiring the carrier to retain black box data, driver logs, and maintenance records before they're lost or destroyed.
