Hilton Head Island, SC (July 17, 2026) – A man died after a car struck his electric bicycle on Marshland Road Tuesday night, July 14.
The collision happened around 9:50 p.m. as a 2019 Dodge Charger and the bicyclist were both traveling north. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The bicyclist was identified as Gregory Herman, 72, of Bluffton. He died from blunt-force injuries, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Charger was not hurt.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to look into what led up to the wreck.
Our condolences go out to Herman's family and loved ones.

Collisions between vehicles and bicycles usually result in serious harm to the rider. Blunt force injuries, fractures, and traumatic brain injuries are common outcomes, and in the most severe cases, these accidents prove fatal for the person on the bike.
When a fatal accident involves a bicyclist and a vehicle traveling in the same direction, questions tend to arise about following distance, lighting, and whether the driver saw the rider in time to react.
A wrongful death lawyer can help a family understand what evidence, such as vehicle data or witness accounts, may clarify what happened. South Carolina allows recovery in a wrongful death claim as long as the deceased is not found more than 50 percent at fault, and such claims generally must be filed within three years of the date of death.
