The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the SUV were not injured.
The coroner’s office said an autopsy will be performed. The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate what caused the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life.

When a government agency may be responsible, a different rule can apply. Under South Carolina's Tort Claims Act, families generally have two years to file a lawsuit. Filing a verified claim first can extend that period to three years.
Under South Carolina law, a wrongful death claim must be filed by the executor or administrator of the deceased person’s estate. Any recovery generally goes first to the spouse and children, followed by the parents and then other heirs.
If the claim succeeds, compensation may cover financial losses caused by the death. It may also cover the family's grief, mental suffering, and loss of companionship. Punitive damages may be possible as well when the conduct involved recklessness, willfulness, or malice.
Because opening an estate and gathering records can take time, starting early gives the personal representative more room to finish those steps. It also gives the family a chance to collect insurance information, financial documents, and other helpful evidence before problems arise.
As the claim moves forward, a South Carolina wrongful death lawyer can speak with insurers and other parties on your family's behalf. This helps keep document requests, questions, and settlement talks organized while the case is pending.
