Dorchester County, SC (September 20, 2026) – One person died after a motorcycle collision at US-17 Alternate and Orangeburg Road in Dorchester County on Friday, September 18. The crash happened at about 8:57 p.m.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling north through the intersection. A pickup was traveling south and attempting to turn left onto Orangeburg Road when the motorcycle struck the pickup.
The motorcycle rider died at the crash site. The pickup driver was not injured.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate what caused the fatal crash.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the person who died.

When the claim succeeds, the recovery generally benefits the surviving spouse and children. If neither survives, the deceased person’s parents may benefit. Other heirs may qualify when there is no surviving spouse, child, or parent.
To establish liability, the personal representative must show that another party caused the death through negligence or another wrongful act. In a motorcycle case, this may involve an unsafe turn, failure to yield, speeding, or distracted driving.
Once the case begins, crash reports, photographs, video footage, vehicle damage, and medical records may help show what occurred. Statements from people who saw the collision may also clarify the actions of each driver.
Depending on the family’s losses, a claim may include funeral expenses, lost financial support, loss of companionship, and mental anguish. The amount available depends on the deceased person’s income, age, family relationships, and other case-specific facts.
Because South Carolina generally allows three years to file a wrongful death lawsuit, families must act within the applicable deadline. Certain circumstances may change the filing period, and missing it can prevent the claim from moving forward.
If questions arise about estate requirements or eligible beneficiaries, a wrongful death lawyer can identify who may benefit from the claim. An attorney can also investigate liability, communicate with insurers, and prepare the required court filings.
