Georgetown County, SC (August 17, 2026) – A motorcyclist died and his passenger was hurt on Sunday evening, August 16, after their motorcycle struck a ditch on South Island Road near George Washington Trail.
The 2018 Indian motorcycle was traveling south around 5:45 p.m. when it struck the ditch and rolled off the roadway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The driver died on the way to the hospital. The passenger was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
Troopers continue looking into what led up to the collision.
Our condolences go out to the driver's family, and we hope the passenger recovers fully.

If the at-fault driver's liability limits aren't enough to cover a passenger's medical bills, South Carolina requires insurers to offer uninsured/underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage, which can help fill that gap.
A passenger may also be able to access UIM coverage through their own auto policy, or a household member's policy, depending on the circumstances, even though they weren't driving at the time of the crash.
Sorting out which policy applies, and in what order, usually becomes complicated when multiple potential sources of coverage exist.
A motorcycle accident lawyer can help a passenger identify every applicable policy, from the motorcycle operator's liability coverage to any UIM coverage that might apply, and can also help make sure claims are filed before applicable deadlines pass.
