Aiken County, SC (August 11, 2026) – A 46-year-old North Carolina woman lost her life, and three other people were injured on Monday morning, August 10, following a four-vehicle chain-reaction collision on Interstate 20.
Highway Patrol troopers determined that a westbound 2023 Honda Civic collided with a 2013 Ford F-250 pickup truck, causing the Honda to become disabled in the roadway. The disabled vehicle was subsequently struck by a 2019 Dodge Ram pickup and a 2025 Lincoln Navigator SUV.
A passenger in one of the vehicles was ejected during the collision and pronounced dead on the scene. Emergency medical personnel took the Lincoln driver, a second Lincoln passenger, and the Honda driver to a nearby hospital for treatment. The occupants of the Dodge and Ford pickup trucks reported no injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Our sincere condolences go out to the victim's family, and our thoughts remain with those recovering in the hospital.
Passengers injured or surviving family members of individuals killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Aiken County, SC, may have legal options to seek compensation from at-fault drivers whose negligence contributed to the collision.
Under South Carolina’s modified comparative fault law, an injured person may recover damages as long as they are not more than 50% responsible for the crash.
Passengers who did not contribute to the collision may be less likely to face a comparative-fault reduction. Qualifying surviving family members may also file a wrongful death claim for certain losses.
Determining liability in a multi-vehicle chain-reaction crash requires examining how the successive impacts occurred and which drivers may have contributed. Financial responsibility can be divided among several motorists, such as a driver who creates an initial obstruction and others who fail to stop in time because of speeding, following too closely, or other unsafe conduct.
Because serious crashes can result in losses that exceed one driver's insurance limits, injured people and families may need to examine multiple insurance policies. Depending on the circumstances, available coverage could include liability policies from other involved motorists and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.
These claims may involve significant losses, including emergency treatment, ongoing medical care, lost wages, funeral expenses, and pain and suffering. Evidence such as crash reports, photographs, vehicle damage, witness statements, and accident reconstruction findings may help establish how the collision unfolded and which parties may be responsible.
