Lexington County, SC (September 21, 2026) – A passenger died Sunday morning, September 20, after a four-vehicle wreck on US Highway 378 near Tom Drafts Circle.
The crash happened at 11:34 a.m. when a 2010 Ford Fusion traveling east crossed the center line.
The Fusion struck three vehicles traveling west: a 2019 Nissan, a 2016 Toyota Corolla, and a 2014 Ford Expedition. The passenger in the Fusion died at the scene.
The drivers of all four vehicles were taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.
Authorities continue to investigate what caused the Fusion to cross the center line.
We extend our sincere condolences to the passenger's family.

Figuring out who's responsible in a multi-vehicle wreck is rarely as simple as pointing to one driver. South Carolina follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which means more than one party can share fault. Additionally, under this rule, each driver's percentage of responsibility directly affects how much they can recover or owe.
When a vehicle crosses the center line and strikes multiple cars, investigators usually have to untangle how each impact happened and in what order.
Physical evidence plays a major role in sorting this out. Skid marks, vehicle damage patterns, and the final resting position of each car can help reconstruct the sequence of collisions. That evidence doesn't last forever, though. Debris gets cleared, vehicles get repaired or sold, and road conditions change, which is why documenting the scene early matters.
When a passenger dies in this crash, the family may also have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim in addition to any injury claims from the surviving drivers.
South Carolina law generally allows a spouse, children, or parents to bring this type of claim. The claim can include damages like funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship. A wrongful death lawyer can help determine who is eligible to bring the claim and how it may interact with any injury claims arising from the same crash.
