Orangeburg, SC (January 5, 2025) — Authorities are continuing to investigate a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early on Saturday, January 3, in Orangeburg. The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 27-year-old Emoni Nicole Chaplin, a local resident who was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, officers were notified at approximately 2:45 a.m. after multiple drivers reported swerving to avoid what they believed was a person lying in the roadway.
The crash occurred on John C. Calhoun Drive between U.S. 601, also known as Magnolia Street, and Medford Street. When officers arrived, they located Chaplin in the roadway, where she was pronounced deceased.
Police later confirmed that the driver involved in the collision initially left the scene but returned about 30 minutes later. Authorities have described the driver, a 43-year-old man, as a suspect in the case.
At this time, the driver’s name has not been released, and officials have not announced whether charges will be filed. The cause and manner of Chaplin’s death remain under investigation.
We offer our sincere sympathies to all those mourning this loss.
Pedestrian fatalities remain a serious concern in Orangeburg County and throughout South Carolina, particularly during overnight hours when visibility is reduced and traffic speeds remain high.
Roadways like U.S. 601 are primarily designed for vehicle travel, and pedestrians on or near these routes face heightened risk, especially in low-light conditions.
Investigators often conduct detailed crash reconstructions in fatal pedestrian cases, reviewing roadway conditions, vehicle damage, lighting, traffic patterns, and witness accounts to determine how the collision occurred and whether driver negligence played a role.
These investigations can take time, and details are often limited in the early stages as officials work to establish the full sequence of events.
For families who lose a loved one in a pedestrian crash, the aftermath can be overwhelming. In addition to profound emotional loss, surviving family members may face unexpected financial challenges, including funeral expenses and the loss of household income.
South Carolina law allows families to pursue a wrongful death claim when negligence is believed to have contributed to a fatal crash. These claims can help families seek compensation while also holding responsible parties accountable.
