Columbia, SC (January 6, 2026) — A deadly pedestrian crash in downtown Columbia has left one man dead and another person seriously injured after a vehicle struck them in a crosswalk on Sunday, January 4.

The Columbia Police Department said the crash occurred around 10:55 p.m. near the intersection of Gervais Street and Park Street, just one block from Assembly Street and the South Carolina State House.

Authorities reported that two pedestrians were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when a vehicle struck them.

Both pedestrians were transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The Richland County Coroner’s Office later identified the person who died as Malcolm D. Johnson, a 29-year-old Columbia resident. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The second pedestrian, an adult woman, remains hospitalized with serious injuries. No additional details about her condition have been released.

Police arrested Randall Miller, 29, in connection with the crash. Officials said Miller was impaired at the time of the collision. Jail records show Miller was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on Monday, where he remains in custody after bond was denied.

The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of Malcolm D. Johnson, and we also hope for strength and healing for the injured woman during this challenging time.

Legal Guidance After a Pedestrian Crash in Columbia

When a driver is suspected of running a traffic signal, driving under the influence, or otherwise acting negligently, law enforcement agencies conduct thorough investigations.

This process can include crash reconstruction, toxicology testing, review of surveillance and traffic camera footage, and interviews with witnesses to determine how the crash occurred and whether criminal charges or civil liability may apply.

For people impacted by fatal or serious pedestrian accidents, the aftermath can be devastating. Beyond coping with grief, surviving relatives often face unexpected medical costs for injured survivors, funeral and memorial expenses, and long-term financial uncertainty.

Injured victims may require ongoing rehabilitation, specialized care, and time away from work, further compounding the stress.

South Carolina law allows victims of pedestrian accidents and the families of those killed in DUI or negligent driving crashes to pursue civil claims for compensation. These claims may cover medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs, and the emotional impact of the tragedy, providing essential support during a difficult period.
