Conway, SC (December 14, 2025) – Emergency crews responded early Thursday, December 11, to a serious two-vehicle crash with entrapment at the intersection of Highway 544 and Cox Ferry Road in Conway, leaving three people injured and multiple lanes of traffic blocked.

According to Horry County Fire Rescue, crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:56 a.m. after reports of a collision involving two vehicles with occupants trapped inside. Upon arrival, first responders found significant vehicle damage and confirmed that extrication operations were necessary to safely remove those trapped.

Three people were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly disclosed at this time.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the cause of the collision, with assistance from the Horry County Police Department and the City of Conway Fire Department.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this crash, and we hope for a full and timely recovery.

Serious Crashes Along Highway 544 in Horry County

Highway 544 is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in Horry County, serving as a vital connector between Conway, Myrtle Beach, Carolina Forest, and surrounding residential and commercial areas.

With steady traffic volumes throughout the day and night, intersections such as Cox Ferry Road often see frequent turning movements, merging traffic, and varying speeds, all factors that can increase the risk of serious collisions.

According to South Carolina traffic data, Horry County consistently ranks among the counties with the highest number of injury-related motor vehicle accidents each year. Two-vehicle crashes account for a large portion of these incidents, particularly at busy intersections and highway access points.

Late-night and early-morning crashes along Highway 544 are especially concerning. Reduced visibility, driver fatigue, and lower traffic enforcement visibility during overnight hours can contribute to higher-impact accidents. When a collision results in vehicle entrapment, it often indicates a significant force of impact, placing occupants at heightened risk of severe injuries.

Additionally, in crashes requiring extrication, victims may suffer traumatic injuries such as fractures, spinal trauma, internal bleeding, or head injuries. Even when safety systems like airbags deploy, the violent nature of these collisions can lead to injuries that are not immediately obvious.

Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, skid marks, debris patterns, and witness statements to determine how a crash occurred. When entrapment is involved, the investigation may also assess vehicle safety performance and collision angles. Determining fault can be complex, particularly when multiple agencies and insurance carriers are involved.

For injured victims and their families, the aftermath of a serious crash can be overwhelming. Medical bills, hospital stays, rehabilitation, time away from work, and uncertainty about insurance coverage often add stress during an already difficult time. Insurance companies may question liability or attempt to minimize injury claims, making it challenging for victims to secure fair compensation.
