Orangeburg County, SC (October 13, 2025) – A tragic collision involving three vehicles in Orangeburg County on October 11 claimed one life and left the community mourning. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the deadly accident occurred around 6:45 p.m. on State Highway 4 when a series of events led to a devastating chain reaction crash.
Master Trooper Hannah Davidson reported that a 2011 Volvo SUV traveling eastbound on Hwy 4 attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway. In doing so, the SUV entered the path of a 2009 BMW traveling westbound. The BMW struck the side of the Volvo before being hit moments later by an oncoming 2025 Ford box truck, also traveling eastbound.
The impact caused significant damage to all vehicles involved. Despite the swift response from Orangeburg County emergency crews, the driver of the BMW sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next-of-kin by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the Volvo SUV and the operator of the box truck were both evaluated by paramedics. Initial reports indicate that neither driver suffered life-threatening injuries. Traffic in the area was temporarily shut down for several hours as law enforcement conducted an on-scene investigation and removed debris from the highway.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Understanding Multi-Vehicle Crashes in South Carolina.

Multi-vehicle crashes, such as the one that occurred on Highway 4, are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions. These accidents often result from a single misjudged turn or failure to yield, triggering a chain reaction that leaves multiple victims injured or worse. In rural parts of Orangeburg County, two-lane highways can pose particular hazards due to limited shoulder space, high speed limits, and reduced visibility at night or dusk.
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, intersections and driveways along rural highways are frequent locations for serious and fatal collisions. Failing to properly gauge the speed of oncoming vehicles or attempting to turn across traffic lanes are common contributing factors.
