Richland County, SC (January 10, 2026) – A deadly two-vehicle crash took place on Thursday, January 8,  on Interstate 20 near the 70-mile marker.

According to reported details, both vehicles were traveling west on I-20 when the crash occurred. A 2014 Jeep attempted to change lanes and struck a minivan while in motion. After the impact, the Jeep left the roadway to the right and overturned.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been identified, and no additional details were released.

The driver of the minivan sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger was also injured and transported to Prisma Health Richland for treatment. The extent of the passenger’s injuries has not been disclosed.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life, and we also wish a swift recovery to those injured.

Why Are Lane Changes So Dangerous on Highways?

Lane changes on busy highways carry risks, especially at higher speeds. Vehicles often travel close together, leaving little room for error. Small misjudgments in spacing or speed can lead to serious crashes, particularly when drivers do not have enough time to react.

Blind spots, sudden braking, or unexpected traffic slowdowns can further increase the danger during lane changes, especially in heavy traffic or poor visibility conditions.

Crashes involving lane changes can result in serious injuries or fatalities. When vehicles collide at highway speeds, occupants may experience blunt force trauma, head injuries, spinal cord damage, or internal injuries. These injuries can require extensive medical treatment and long recovery periods.

Rollovers are also more likely when a vehicle leaves the roadway, which can increase the risk of life-threatening harm. Even occupants in other vehicles may suffer injuries ranging from fractures to soft tissue damage, depending on how the crash unfolds, the type of vehicles involved, and whether safety restraints were used.

A car accident lawyer can help families and individuals who have been hurt understand the steps that may be available to them after a serious crash. This may include reviewing crash-related documents, medical records, and insurance information.

Legal guidance can also help explain how claims are typically handled and what types of compensation may be available, such as coverage for medical care, funeral expenses, or lost income. These explanations are helpful for making informed decisions.
