Tractor-Trailers Among 69 Vehicles in Pileup on I-95 in Santee, SC

Tractor-Trailers Among 69 Vehicles in Pileup on I-95 in Santee, SC
October 2, 2026

Santee, SC (October 2, 2026) – A chain-reaction crash that involved 69 vehicles shut down I-95 southbound near the Lake Marion bridge on Thursday, October 1, around 8:50 a.m.

Clarendon County Fire Rescue and emergency units were first sent for a six-vehicle collision, but the count kept growing as more calls came in. About 92 vehicles were on the bridge when it happened.

Several commercial vehicles were involved, and earlier reports said about 15 of them were tractor-trailers. One vehicle caught fire. Traffic backed up so badly that some first-arriving emergency units had to leave their vehicles behind and walk to reach injured drivers.

Seventeen people were taken to a McLeod Health Clarendon, and others went to additional hospitals. The total number of people taken for treatment after the wreck has not been confirmed. No deaths have been reported.

Earlier reports said dense fog cut visibility sharply that morning. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the chain reaction.

Our thoughts are with everyone hurt as they recover.

What Federal Rules Govern Commercial Truck Drivers in Santee, SC?

Commercial truck drivers in Santee must follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, which limit driving hours, require vehicle inspections and maintenance, and set driver qualification standards. A property-carrying driver generally may drive 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty and only within a 14-hour window.

These rules matter after a truck accident because they create a paper trail. Carriers generally must keep driver logs and supporting documents, including electronic logging device data, for six months.

They also maintain inspection reports, repair records, and driver qualification files. Retention periods can be short, so records that could show whether a rule was followed may be discarded or overwritten if no one asks for them.

Responsibility in a truck claim can extend beyond the driver. The motor carrier, a maintenance contractor, a trailer owner, or a company that loaded the freight may each have obligations under the regulations, depending on the facts.

Federal rules also set minimum liability insurance levels for commercial carriers, which for general freight is $750,000. A car accident lawyer can send preservation letters to the companies involved, request the records that federal rules require them to keep, and review which parties may share responsibility.

If you have been involved in a multi-vehicle collision and have questions about trucking records, hours rules, or which companies may be involved, our team at The Arndt Law Firm can explain how the federal regulations generally work and what documents may be worth preserving for you.
