Piedmont, SC (September 7, 2026) – A 17-year-old died early Monday, September 7, after the truck he was riding in left the road on Highway 81 near Bagwell Road.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 1:10 a.m. when a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado that traveled west on SC-81 veered off the left side of the road and struck a ditch, a parked boat, and a gas line before the boat was pushed into a nearby house.
Of the four people in the truck, one died at the scene. Two others were taken to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial, and the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
The Anderson County Coroner's Office identified the teen who died, and his death was ruled accidental, caused by a traumatic neck injury, among other injuries.
Troopers and the coroner's office continue to piece together what led the truck to leave the roadway.
We extend our deepest condolences to Aidan's family and everyone who knew him.

When a minor dies in a crash, South Carolina law gives their parents a distinct legal path to hold responsible parties accountable.
Under the South Carolina Wrongful Death Act, a parent or the personal representative of the child's estate can bring a claim on behalf of surviving family members for losses like funeral expenses and the loss of the child's companionship and guidance going forward.
Separately, South Carolina's survival statute allows the estate itself to pursue damages for what the child experienced before death, including any pain and suffering in the moments leading up to it. These are two distinct claims that can be pursued together, and families are sometimes surprised to learn both exist, since each compensates for different kinds of loss.
Fault in a single-vehicle crash isn't always straightforward, especially when multiple occupants were riding together, and questions arise about speed, road conditions, or mechanical issues with the vehicle itself.
South Carolina follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which allows recovery as long as a party is 50% or less at fault, and this matters when defense arguments try to shift blame onto factors other than how the vehicle was being driven.
Investigating those factors, including obtaining the vehicle's data recorder information and any maintenance records, is work a wrongful death lawyer can take on early, before evidence like that becomes harder to access.
