Update: Woman Killed, Two Injured in Apartment Fire on Ashley River Rd in Charleston, SC

A 57-year-old woman lost her life, and two other residents sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries following an apartment fire at Middleton Cove Apartments on Ashley River Road in Charleston early Sunday morning, August 2.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Rachel Fitzpatrick of Charleston.

Investigators said she was found inside the apartment building after a K9 trained in human remains detection assisted in the search. Officials reported that her vehicle was at the property and that she had last been seen near the apartment the day before the fire.

Emergency crews responded shortly after 3:00 a.m. and evacuated residents while firefighters searched the building and battled the blaze. As conditions worsened, crews withdrew from the structure and continued firefighting operations from outside. The building contained 18 apartments housing 21 occupants. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
