Jasper County, SC (October 7, 2025) – A pedestrian tragically lost their life on Monday night, October 6, after being struck by a vehicle along South Carolina Highway 336 (Old House Rd) near its intersection with South Carolina Highway 462 in Jasper County.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), the collision occurred around 8:40 p.m. as the pedestrian was walking westbound along the shoulder of South Carolina Highway in the area of Mulberry Alley. For reasons still under investigation, a 2019 Honda Accord traveling westbound hit the pedestrian.
Emergency responders arrived quickly but sadly pronounced the pedestrian deceased at the scene. The driver of the Honda remained at the site and did not report any injuries. Officials noted that the posted speed limit in that area is 55 mph. The Jasper County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the victim, pending family notification.
SCHP continues to investigate the crash to determine what caused the pedestrian to enter the roadway and whether environmental or visibility factors played a role in the tragic event. Authorities have urged anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact law enforcement to assist in the ongoing investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this challenging time.
Pedestrian Safety and Legal Guidance in South Carolina

Pedestrian accidents continue to be a major safety concern in South Carolina, particularly in rural areas where roads such as South Carolina Highway 336 lack sidewalks and adequate lighting. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian deaths account for nearly one in five traffic-related fatalities nationwide.
In Jasper County, long stretches of open roadway often have limited shoulders and high speed limits, making them especially dangerous for pedestrians. Even cautious walkers can be at risk when visibility is poor or when drivers fail to remain alert. Factors such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired operation are frequent contributors to fatal pedestrian crashes.
Authorities stress that both drivers and pedestrians share the responsibility of preventing these tragedies. Pedestrians are encouraged to use reflective clothing, walk facing oncoming traffic, and avoid walking at night whenever possible. Motorists, on the other hand, should reduce speed in poorly lit areas, remain attentive to their surroundings, and be prepared for unexpected hazards.
Beyond the devastating emotional toll, pedestrian fatalities also leave families facing overwhelming financial burdens. Medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional suffering can all add up, compounding an already painful situation.
