Horry County, SC (October 28, 2025) – A tragic accident in Horry County claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Monday, October 27, when a motorcycle and a Ford SUV collided at the intersection of Highway 17 Bypass and Inlet Square Drive in the Murrells Inlet area.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. when a 2024 Ford SUV traveling north on Highway 17 attempted to make a left turn onto Inlet Square Dr. At that moment, a 2023 KTM motorcycle traveling south on the highway struck the side of the SUV. The collision caused the motorcycle to flip and eject the rider onto the pavement.
Troopers confirmed that the motorcyclist died at the scene, while the driver of the Ford SUV was not injured. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending family notification. Emergency medical crews and law enforcement remained at the scene for several hours, directing traffic and conducting an investigation.
Traffic along Hwy 17 Bypass was temporarily rerouted as authorities cleared the wreckage. The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speed, visibility, or right-of-way violations played a role.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Motorcycle Safety and Crash Risks in South Carolina

Motorcycle accidents remain a serious concern across South Carolina, with a rising number of fatalities reported each year. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, motorcycle riders account for a disproportionate percentage of traffic deaths compared to other motorists. The combination of high-speed roadways, driver inattention, and limited protection makes riders particularly vulnerable in collisions with larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks.
Intersections such as Hwy 17 and Inlet Square Dr are especially dangerous for motorcyclists. Many crashes occur when drivers fail to yield while turning left, often underestimating the distance and speed of oncoming motorcycles. Common injuries in such accidents include head trauma, spinal cord injuries, and severe fractures, injuries that can be life-changing even when not fatal.
Motorcyclists can reduce risks by wearing DOT-approved helmets, maintaining visible clothing, and using headlights even during daylight hours. Drivers, on the other hand, must remain attentive, check blind spots carefully, and yield the right of way before turning across traffic lanes.
