Orangeburg Co., SC – Two Killed in Tragic Head-On Collision on North Rd

Orangeburg Co., SC – Two Killed in Tragic Head-On Collision on North Rd
February 16, 2026

Orangeburg County, SC (February 16, 2026) – A head-on collision on Friday night, February 13, claimed the lives of two Orangeburg residents and left a third person hospitalized. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) responded to the accident on North Road near Hodge Drive at approximately 7:20 p.m.

According to the official report, a 2007 Nissan sedan was traveling westbound on North Road when it suddenly swerved left of the center line. This maneuver placed the vehicle directly in the path of an eastbound 2013 Chevrolet sedan, resulting in a high-speed head-on impact.

The occupants of the Nissan, identified as 78-year-old Jimmy Callahan and 77-year-old Stella Callahan, both sustained fatal injuries and passed away. The driver of the Chevrolet was injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital for treatment; their current condition has not been disclosed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate why the Nissan crossed the center line.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jimmy and Stella Callahan. And our thoughts are with the injured person as they begin their recovery.

What Options Do Families Have After a Fatal Car Accident in Orangeburg County?

Families usually have two main paths: filing a wrongful death claim to cover the loss of their loved one, or a survival action to cover the medical bills and suffering that happened before they passed. In South Carolina, these claims are typically filed against the at-fault driver's insurance policy to ensure the family isn't left with funeral and hospital debts.

In South Carolina, when someone dies due to another driver's mistake, the law allows the "executor" or personal representative of the person's estate to file a claim. This is meant to help the surviving family (spouses, children, or parents) with the financial and emotional hole left behind. It covers things like funeral costs, the loss of the person’s income or benefits, and the loss of companionship and protection.

While a wrongful death claim looks at the family's loss, a survival action looks at what the deceased person went through. If there were medical treatments or hospital stays between the time of the crash and the time of death, those bills can be astronomical.

A survival action allows the estate to recover those specific costs, along with compensation for any pain the person suffered. This ensures that the hospital or creditors don't come after the grieving family's personal savings to pay off those medical debts.
