Blythewood, SC (February 23, 2026) – A violent multi-vehicle chain reaction claimed the life of one driver on Friday, February 20, on US 21 near the Richland and Fairfield County line. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) responded to the scene involving five different vehicles and a commercial truck.
According to authorities, the crash began when a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban and a 2019 Hino 338 box truck were traveling northbound. When the Suburban stopped for traffic, the Hino truck crossed the center line into the oncoming southbound lanes.
The Hino truck sideswiped a Ford F150 before striking a 2025 Kia Sportage head-on. The truck then collided with a 2018 Lexus SUV, which was pushed into the stopped Suburban. The Hino truck eventually veered off the roadway, striking several mailboxes before overturning. Tragically, the driver of the Kia Sportage sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The local authorities are currently leading the investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.
When a commercial vehicle crosses a center line and causes a fatality, the legal situation involves corporate liability and strict federal regulations. Your priority should be to ensure that the truck's "black box" data is preserved and that a professional investigation is launched to determine if driver fatigue or mechanical failure played a role.
Commercial trucks are equipped with Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) that record speed, braking, and steering maneuvers leading up to an impact. A lawyer can immediately issue a "spoliation letter" to the truck's owner, legally barring them from destroying or overwriting this digital evidence.
The local police department will investigate the scene, but a private investigation often looks deeper into the trucking company’s records.
This includes checking the driver's "Hours of Service" logs to see if they were driving beyond legal limits (fatigue) and reviewing their personnel file for previous safety violations. This means that if a company puts an unqualified or exhausted driver on the road, they may be held liable for the resulting tragedy.
Filing a wrongful death claim against the company that owns the truck is a massive undertaking during a time of grief. Contacting a lawyer allows you to have a dedicated peer who handles the technical and legal "heavy lifting." A lawyer will ensure your family’s rights are fully respected, protecting you from aggressive insurance adjusters while you focus on honoring your loved one’s memory.
